zinc finger, a loop of a transcription factor that is stabilized by a zinc ion coordinated with histidine nitrogen atoms or cysteine sulfur atoms at critical junctures in a protein. It is an important step in the cloning and sequencing of human general transcription factors because individual proteins appear to be involved in the regulation of transcription and in RNA transport.
