xylometazoline hydrochloride /zī′lōmetaz′əlēn/ , an alpha-adrenergic vasoconstrictor. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed as an intranasal medication for the treatment of congestion due to colds, hay fever, sinusitis, and other upper respiratory allergies. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Glaucoma or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to sympathomimetic medications prohibits its use. It is used with caution in patients having cardiovascular disease. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are irritation to the mucosa, rebound nasal congestion, and effects associated with systemic absorption, including sedation and alterations in cardiovascular function.
