watt (W) /wot/ [James Watt, Scottish engineer, 1736–1819] , the unit of electric power or work in the meter/kilogram/second system of notation. The watt is the product of the voltage and the amperage. One watt of power is dissipated when a current of 1 ampere flows across a difference in potential of 1 volt.
