volt (V) /vōlt/ [Alessandro Volta, Italian physicist, 1745–1827] , the unit of electric potential. In an electric circuit a volt is the force required to send 1 ampere of current through 1 ohm of resistance, or the difference in potential between two points on a conductor carrying a charge of 1 ampere when there is a dissipation of 1 watt between them.
