ventriculopleural shunt /-plo͝or″əl/ [L, ventriculus + Gk, pleura, rib; ME, shunten] , a surgical procedure for diverting cerebrospinal fluid from engorged ventricles in hydrocephalus, usually in the newborn. In this procedure, cerebrospinal fluid is diverted from the lateral ventricle into the pleural cavity. It is used to correct both the obstructive and the communicating types of hydrocephalus.
