venerupin poisoning

venerupin poisoning /ven′əro̅o̅″pin/ , a potentially fatal form of shellfish poisoning that results from ingestion of oysters or clams contaminated with venerupin, a toxin that causes impaired liver functioning, GI distress, and leukocytosis. The shellfish toxin occurs in waters around Japan. About one third of the cases are fatal. See also shellfish poisoning.
