vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)

vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a peptide factor that stimulates the proliferation of cells of the endothelium of blood vessels. It promotes tissue vascularization and is important in blood vessel formation in tumors. It exists in four forms with different lengths (121, 165, 189, and 206 amino acids). Levels are elevated in hypoxia. Also called vascular permeability factor.
