twilight state [Ger, Zwielicht, twilight; L, status] , an impaired state of consciousness in which the patient may experience visual or auditory hallucinations and responds to them with irrational behavior. The person may be unaware of the surroundings at the time of the experience and have no memory of it later, except perhaps to recall a related dream. It may be induced with certain anesthetics. Also called deep sedation.
