tungsten (W) /tung″stən/ [SW, tung, heavy, sten, stone; wolfram, the German word for tungsten] , a metallic element. Its atomic number is 74; its atomic mass is 183.85. It has the highest melting point of all metals and is used as a target material in x-ray tubes and as filaments in incandescent light bulbs.
