Trichuris trichiura, a species of whipworms, commonly found in warm, moist regions of the world. Ingestion of whipworm eggs results in infection in humans. The parasites live mainly in the cecum or large intestine. Heavy infections cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. Very heavy infections may result in anemia because of intestinal blood loss.
