trichomoniasis

trichomoniasis /trik′əmənī″əsis/ [Gk, thrix + monas + osis, condition] , a vaginal infection caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. It is characterized by itching; burning; and frothy, pale yellow to green, malodorous vaginal discharge. With chronic infection all symptoms may disappear, although the organisms are still present. In men, infection is usually asymptomatic but may be evidenced by a persistent or recurrent urethritis. Infection is transmitted by sexual intercourse, (rarely) by moist washcloths, or, in newborns, by passage through the birth canal. Diagnosis is by microscopic examination of fresh vaginal secretions. Treatment is by oral metronidazole and tinidazole. Reinfection is common if sexual partners are not treated simultaneously.
