transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI)

transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), a syndrome seen in persons receiving transfusions, characterized by pulmonary edema, dyspnea, hypoxemia, hypotension, and fever; it is thought to be a reaction to antibodies or other components of the donor blood product. The blood transfusion must be immediately stopped. Patients need oxygen support, and in some cases the syndrome can be fatal.
