stress theory of aging, a stochastic theory of aging that hypothesizes that aging and death result from the effects of environmental stressors that cause wear and tear on cells and disrupt their function. The generation of free radicals during oxidative cell processes is sometimes cited as a specific stressor that disrupts DNA and protein function and so causes aging. See also theories of aging.
