streptococcal infection

streptococcal infection, an infection caused by pathogenic bacteria of one of several species of the genus Streptococcus or their toxins. Almost any organ of the body may be involved. The infections occur in many forms, including cellulitis, endocarditis, erysipelas, impetigo, meningitis, pneumonia, scarlet fever, tonsillitis, and urinary tract infection. See also strep throat.
