stratum lucidum

stratum lucidum, one of the layers of the epidermis, situated just beneath the stratum corneum and present only in the thick skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. It contains translucent eleidin that forms keratin. Also called clear cell layer. Compare stratum basale, stratum corneum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum. See also skin.
