stem cell [AS, stemm, tree, trunk; L, cella, storeroom] , a formative cell; a cell whose daughter cells may give rise to other cell types. A pluripotential stem cell is one that has the potential to develop into several different types of mature cells, including lymphocytes, granulocytes, thrombocytes, and erythrocytes.
