status asthmaticus

status asthmaticus, an acute, severe, and prolonged asthma attack. It is caused by critically diminished airway diameter resulting from ongoing bronchospasm, edema, and mucous plugging. Hypoxia, cyanosis, and unconsciousness may follow, and the attack may be fatal. Treatment includes supplemental oxygen given to correct hypoxemia, bronchodilators given intravenously or by aerosol inhalation, corticosteroids, mechanical ventilation, sedation, frequent therapy, and emotional support.
