sporogony /spôrog″ənē/ [Gk, sporos + genesis, origin] , reproduction by means of spores. It refers specifically to the formation of sporozoites during the sexual stage of the life cycle of a sporozoon, primarily the malarial parasite Plasmodium. Fusion of the sex cells occurs in the body of the invertebrate host, the female Anopheles mosquito in the case of Plasmodium, where the encysted zygote undergoes multiple division, giving rise to the sporozoites. Compare schizogony.
