sinus surgery

sinus surgery, surgery to improve drainage or remove diseased sinus membranes. See also nasal polyp, sinusitis. ▪ METHOD: Endoscopic surgery is the primary method for treating infected and/or blocked sinuses and has largely replaced other procedures performed with an open approach, such as the Caldwell-Luc procedure. Small polyps, foreign bodies, and infected tissue can be removed, as needed, during sinus surgery. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Surgery for the treatment of chronic sinusitis is most effective when antibiotic therapy is employed first, and then again following surgery to prevent reinfection. ▪ OUTCOME CRITERIA: Sinus surgery does not cure sinusitis, and a second procedure may be necessary.
