silver nitrate (AgNO3), a topical antiseptic. ▪ INDICATIONS: A 1% solution was traditionally prescribed for the prevention of gonococcal ophthalmia in newborns, but povidone-iodine is now usually used because it is less expensive and has a broader spectrum of action. Stronger concentrations can also be used on wet dressings for cauterizing wounds, removal of granulation tissue and warts, and prophylaxis following burns. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known sensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are severe local inflammation, burns, and argyria, and staining.
