sigmoidectomy

sigmoidectomy /sig′moidek″təmē/ [Gk, sigma + eidos + ektomē, excision] , excision of the sigmoid flexure of the colon, most commonly performed to remove a malignant tumor. A large percentage of cancers of the lower bowel occur in the sigmoid colon.
