sand bath

sand bath [Ibusuki, Japan sand bath] , 1. (in health care) the application of warm, dry sand or of damp sand to the body. Also called ammotherapy. 2. (in analytic chemistry) a sealed stainless steel frame or other vessel capable of withstanding high heat filled with sand and placed on a heat source. It is used to facilitate rapid, consistent temperature in a vessel when heat is needed for a chemical reaction.
