salpingostomy /sal′ping·gos″təmē/ [Gk, salpinx + stoma, mouth] , the formation of an artificial opening in a fallopian tube to restore patency in a tube whose fimbriated opening has been closed by infection or by chronic inflammation or to drain an abscess or a fluid accumulation. A prosthesis may be inserted to maintain the patency of the fallopian tube and to direct the route of the ova to assist fertilization.
