salpingectomy /sal′pinjek″təmē/ [Gk, salpinx, tube, ektomē, excision] , surgical removal of one or both fallopian tubes. It is performed for removal of a cyst or tumor, for excision of an abscess, or, if both tubes are removed, as a sterilization procedure or for tubal pregnancy. Often the operation is done with a hysterectomy or an oophorectomy.
