Saint John’s wort

Saint John’s wort /sānt jonz wort/ , any of various species of the genus Hypericum. H. perforatum is a medicinal herb, which is used as a mild antidepressant, sedative, and anxiolytic; it is also used topically for inflammation of the skin, contusions, myalgia, and first-degree burns. St. John’s wort is one of the most utilized herbal products in the United States. Many brands are now available and sold over the counter as dietary supplements. The patient should be cautioned that this herb interacts with many prescription medications. There is insufficient evidence to support its efficacy in the treatment of depression and anxiety.
