round ligament [L, rotundus, round, ligare, to bind] , 1. a curved fibrous band that is attached at one end to the fovea of the head of the femur and at the other end to the transverse ligament of the acetabulum. 2. a fibrous cord extending from the umbilicus to the anterior part of the liver. It is the remnant of the umbilical vein. 3. in the female, a fibromuscular band that extends from the anterior surface of the uterus through the inguinal canal to the labium majora. The structure is homologous to the spermatic cord in the male.
