root resorption of teeth

root resorption of teeth [AS, rot + L, resorbere, to suck back; AS, toth] , destruction of the cementum or dentin of tooth roots due to osteoclastic activity. If only the apex of the root is affected, the root may become shortened and blunted. If the middle of the root is affected, the pulp canal will generally be penetrated. Root resorption may occur externally or internally within the tooth.
