rifampin /rif″əmpin/ , an antibacterial. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in combination for the treatment of tuberculosis, staphylococcal infections, and Legionella pneumonia, and in meningococcal meningitis and Hemophilus influenzae prophylaxis. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Liver dysfunction or disease or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to rifamycin prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are liver toxicity and a syndrome resembling influenza. GI distress; aches and cramps; and discoloration of urine, saliva, and sweat commonly occur. This drug interacts with many other drugs.
