ribonucleic acid (RNA) /rī′bōno̅o̅klē″ik/ [ribose + L, nucleus, nut kernel, acidus, sour] , a nucleic acid, found in both the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells, that plays several roles in the translation of the genetic code and the assembly of proteins.
