rhinophyma

rhinophyma /rī′nōfī″mə/ [Gk, rhis + phyma, tumor] , a form of rosacea in which there is sebaceous hyperplasia. See also rosacea. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: Redness, prominent vascularity, swelling, and distortion of the skin of the nose can cause significant disfigurement. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Treatment includes dermabrasion, electrosurgery, plastic surgery, and laser resurfacing. The changes in appearance can cause emotional stress that the health care provider should address. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: There is no known cause for rhinophyma. At one time, it was attributed to excessive alcohol use. There is no clinical evidence or research to support this attribution.
