reagent

reagent /rē·ā″jənt/ [L, re, again, agere, to act] , a chemical substance known to react in a specific way. A reagent is used to detect or synthesize another substance in a chemical reaction. Examples include Benedict’s reagent, used to test for glucose, and Biuret reagent, used to test for protein.
