pyrazinamide /pī′rəzin″əmīd/ , an antimycobacterial. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in combination chemotherapy in the treatment of tuberculosis in hospitalized patients who fail to respond to other medications. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Severe liver damage, acute gout, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. Use with caution in renal failure, chronic gout, diabetes mellitus, or porphyria. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Common side effects include malaise, nausea, GI upset, and arthralgia and myalgia. Among the more serious adverse reactions are hepatotoxicity and hyperuricemia.
