pylorus

pylorus /pīlôr″əs/ pl. pylori, pyloruses [Gk, pyle, gate, ouros, guard] , a narrow, nearly tubular part of the stomach that angles to the right from the body of the stomach toward the duodenum. The most common position of the pylorus is about 3 cm to the right of the sagittal axis. It is distinctively marked by the thickening of the pyloric sphincter, and its lining is composed of an intestinal kind of epithelium rather than the gastric kind common to the body of the stomach. −pyloric, adj.
