pleurodynia /plo͝or′ōdin″ē·ə/ [Gk, pleura + odyne, pain] , acute inflammation of the intercostal muscles and the muscular attachment of the diaphragm to the chest wall. It is characterized by sudden, severe pain and tenderness, fever, headache, and anorexia. These symptoms are aggravated by movement and breathing. The lungs are not affected, and characteristically there is no cough or pleural effusion. See also epidemic pleurodynia.
