phycomycosis /fī′kōmīkō″sis/ [Gk, phykos + mykes, fungus, osis, condition] , a fungal infection caused by a species of the order Phycomycetes. These organisms are common in the soil and are not usually pathogenic. Severe nosocomial pulmonary phycomycosis sometimes occurs with advanced diabetes mellitus that is untreated or out of control and complicated by ketoacidosis. See also zygomycosis.
