phagosome /fag″əsōm/ , a membrane-bound cytoplasmic vesicle within the phagocyte that engulfs it. The vesicle contains phagocytized materials and may fuse with a lysosome, forming a phagolysosome within which the lysosome digests the phagocytized material. Also called phagocytic vacuole.
