paregoric /per′əgôr″ik/ , a camphorated tincture of opium. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of diarrhea and as an analgesic. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known hypersensitivity to this drug or to any opium derivative prohibits its use. It should not be used when diarrhea is caused by a toxic substance. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Drowsiness and dizziness are common. When used as directed, nausea and constipation may occur. Other adverse effects include respiratory depression, hypotension and miosis, and, with continued use, psychological dependence.
