paralysis

paralysis /pəral″isis/ pl. paralyses [Gk, paralyein, to be palsied] , the loss of muscle function, sensation, or both. It may be caused by a variety of problems, such as trauma, disease, and poisoning. Paralyses may be classified according to the cause, muscle tone, distribution, or body part affected.
