para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS, PASA) /per′ə·amē′nōsal′ isil″ik/ , a bacteriostatic agent. Also called aminosalicylic acid. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis and has unlabeled indications for Crohn’s disease. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It may interact with other drugs such as digoxin. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Fever, skin eruptions and other kinds of hypersensitivity reactions, goiter, hypokalemia, and acidosis may occur.
