oropharynx

oropharynx /ôr′ōfer″ingks/ [L, oris, mouth; Gk, pharynx, throat] , one of the three anatomical divisions of the pharynx that lies posterior to the mouth and is continuous above with the nasopharynx and below with the laryngopharynx. It extends behind the mouth from the soft palate above to the level of the hyoid bone below and contains the palatine and lingual tonsils. Compare laryngopharynx, nasopharynx.
