oophorosalpingectomy /ō′əfôr′əsal′pinjek″təmē/ [Gk, oophoron + salpinx, tube, ektomē, excision] , the surgical removal of one or both ovaries and the corresponding fallopian tubes, performed to remove a cyst or tumor, excise an abscess, or treat endometriosis. A bilateral procedure causes sterility and induces menopause, unless a malignancy is present; estrogen therapy may be started to relieve the unpleasant side effects of the abrupt onset of menopause.
