Norwegian scabies [Norway; L, scabere, to scratch] , a severe infestation of human skin by an itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. The condition is associated with intense itching, crusting and scaling of the skin, and insect egg burrows that appear as discolored lines in the affected skin areas. The infestation is so named because it was first described in Norway, but it can occur anywhere in the world. Compare scabies.
