nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) /nē″void/ , an inherited form of premalignant skin lesion. It is an autosomal-dominant trait. Multiple basal cell skin cancers and jaw cysts are the most common features. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: The condition is diagnosed when there is a combination of major and minor features associated with the disease. Major features include multiple basal cell skin cancers, increased calcium deposits in the head, jaw or bone cysts, pits on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, and a parent, sibling, or child with the syndrome. Minor features include medulloblastoma, enlarged head size, cleft lip or palate, extra digits, bifid ribs, visual deficits, benign fibrous tumors, and abdominal cysts. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Treatment is symptomatic and individualized to the patient based on presenting features. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: The high risk associated with the development of skin cancers mandates that the patient be extremely careful about sun exposure.
