negative end-expiratory pressure (NEEP)

negative end-expiratory pressure (NEEP), the application of subatmospheric pressure to a patient’s airway on exhalation during mechanical ventilation. The technique counterbalances the increase in mean intrathoracic pressure caused by intermittent positive-pressure breathing and is intended to reduce intrathoracic pressure for venous return to the right atrium. Generally the negative pressure is applied by using a jet or Venturi system.
