myxedema

myxedema /mik′sədē″mə/ [Gk, myxa, mucus, oidema, swelling] , the most severe form of hypothyroidism. It is characterized by swelling of the hands, face, feet, and periorbital tissues and may lead to coma and death. Also spelled myxoedema. See also hypothyroidism.
