mucus extravasation phenomenon, extravasation of mucus into the surrounding connective tissue from a damaged minor salivary gland excretory duct followed by an inflammatory reaction leading to the formation of a pool of macrophages and mucin surrounded by a wall of granulation tissue, visible as a small nodule or vesicle on the oral mucosa. Also called mucocele. Compare mucus retention cyst.
