minocycline hydrochloride /min′əsī″klēn/ , a tetracycline antibiotic. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsia, anthrax, and other microorganisms. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It must be used with caution in cases of renal or hepatic dysfunction. Known hypersensitivity to this or other tetracyclines prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are GI disturbances, phototoxicity, vestibular toxicity, potentially serious superinfections, and various allergic reactions. Use during pregnancy or in children younger than 8 years of age may result in discoloration of teeth.
