mephobarbital /mef′ōbär″bitol/ , an anticonvulsant and sedative. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia, and epilepsy. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Porphyria or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to barbiturates prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are drug dependence, a hangover effect, deficiency in vitamin D, paradoxical excitement, and GI disturbance.
