maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) test, a test of a pregnant woman’s blood designed to indicate an increased risk for fetal open neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. It may also indicate an increased risk for Down syndrome. See also alpha-fetoprotein.
