mallet fracture, a fracture in which the dorsal base fragment of a distal phalanx of a finger or toe is not contiguous with the rest of the phalange. The fracture disrupts the insertion of the distal portion of the extensor mechanism, resulting in a loss of active distal interphalangeal joint extension.
